I hate driving in the stuff. It took me 1hr to get to work when it usually take 25mins. Oh well, at least the snow looks pretty.

I guess I'll be getting snow tire for my back wheels. Did anyone else drive they're mustang in this stuff?

I had to drive my car 2 winters and would never do it again.
snow looks cool right now until the mud and dirt gets mixed in it

The GTo seems to handle better the Mustang in Wet weather ( Maybe Since it Lacks the Power) But either way the Mustang is Going in my Moms Garage and the GTO is moving on over for winter. The taurass is now Number 1 car until it gets over 45 outside. SNOW SUCKS BALLS!!!

What are snow tires?

John- The goat handles better due to the IRS. Not because of the lack of power.

My fair weather weekend warrior pony is enjoying her own enclosed stable.
Sung as a bug under a warm cover..... drinking trickle juice.
Her tires are overinflated and her tank full of Staibill juice!
She's soooooo spoiled!!!!!!

I love Snow. I plowed the driveway with my ATV. Took the snowmobile around the yard a few times. My 4 year old was doing Donuts and fishtailing with his ATV in the snow.
But I don't have to commute in the stuff.

Yeah Drive that THING!

Yes..had to drive it of course and traffic was just nasty. There was an accident so we sat parked on Rt 56 for 20 minutes. The snow plows do a really ****ty job from Wheaton to Lombard. It was all ice crusted like driving over a million pot holes. Once I get near Oak Brook Terrace then it was much better. Damn it has ALWAYS been that way...I want them to get off their butts and plow Rt 56!! I left early and I normally get to work 30 minutes before I clock in <coffee breakfast ect> Today I made it with only 6 minutes left. Parking lot was all ice lucky I didn't hit the light pole....I have had better days however I have also had far worse drives ....Brrrrrr

So now IRS is the key to handling in the snow? What does that have to do with it?

I like good old solid axel rear wheel drive for the snow. I only used the 4 wheel drive to get a quick jump on the traffic from a 2 into 1 lane intersection this morning in my beast...

Snow sucks. I work outside, so I'm biased. I do however, prefer snow over rain!

It's a matter of physics. An IRS is better for Road racing conditions right? Well, handling is where the IRS shines. I own both, and trust me on this one. If my Cobra wasn't less than 2 inches from the ground, I'd be rocking it out in snow. Sure, Grabber has snow tires, but it is easier to go sideways in an SRA car than it is an IRS car. That's all I'm saying.

I never said an IRS is the "key" to handling in the snow. I was saying to John, that compared to his SRA and IRS cars, his IRS car would be better in the snow.

I understand the general handling benifits of IRS vs SRA but when it comes to snow, I just still don't believe SRA would prove to be a noticable advantage. Maybe it is my general disbelief of the popular theories (like the BS that front wheel drive is better for snowy conditions than RWD).

The best way to get a car to go sideways is to over-power both rear wheels, which can happen in SRA or IRS if there is a limited slip, traction lock or other locker in the rear. This is not necessarily the best for control (a driver needs beeter control of his "go-foot") but it is still better than a one wheel spin of an open rear axle than can result in not moving at all.

Good dedicated snowtires are still the 100% best way to get better winter handling.

I totally agree. While FWD is useful in wet and snowy conditions, it does not prove to be better than RWD. It would depend on exactly what you are saying. Slip, traction lock, etc. Good info!:023:

.....God please not a 2.5 hr commute home...NO!!!!!!

Shar, I, by choice, drive a SUV for work in the winter and summer, it's boring!
I don't drive my Stang because I commute all over the city, some places I go are really BAD.
Park your baby for a week and drive a beater. After a week in a beater.......
That 2.5 hr commute will be like heaven in your pony! :023:

I have no one to call if I break down on the highway in a beater so that is not an option. In fact, I have always bought new cars except once even when I was married. So unless I can buy another new car....and I was going to do that this month in fact then something <!!> always comes up. Guess I should wait till I get rid of some more bills, that would be the smart thing to do. What the heck IF I have an accident and I never have had one, then I get it fixed and trade it in on another Stang.

I can't even imagine what it would be like to know the Stang is in the garage during the Winter or rainy weather...can't even imagine that kind of luxury. : ) But maybe next year.

I now have 3 stangs and no SUV for now so the 98 or the 03 will probably get driven a little bit in the snow. I plan to take the train on the really heavy days. The station is less that a mile from my house so worse case I have to drive that much. The worst part is where I work. Its like a ramp straight up to get out into fast moving traffic. In the old days (2000 and before) I drove a Mustang everyday too and just had to park across the street to avoid the slippery RAMP!! Since then they built this brand new building and it has a nice level parking lot so thats where I'm going if I have to. No biggie for me though. I'm glad to have all my stangs I just have to do things a little differently again.

I love snow, I even like driving in it whether it is in my truck or, as in years ago, my 66 Mustang or the long gone 94 Mustang GT. I just don't like the rush hour traffic jam caused by the snow.

Nowadays, I keep my 06 Mustang out of it just to save it from the salt and from the mistakes other drivers on the roads might make. Yeah, the luxury of an available beater...

I've always see snow as an slower speed way to gain experience for high speed slide recovery. Same with rainy weather. Practice on the edge of control so that emergency manuevers become second nature. Working second shift a number of years ago helped with availability of the nearly empty snow covered work parking lot when leaving work late at night.

You are very right! If the streets were pretty empty, it is excellant practice and can be fun. So I think I'll just tell the 135,000 other cars on I-55 to get the hell off the road! LOL Man it IS a nightmare just being on the brake all that time.
