Ok don't laugh I know this is 10 months away. BUT I had to put in my vacation requests for 2009 last week! Unreal....But I vowed 2009 I was going to take time off to go to the Springfield Festival. I think Dan went last year.

So think about this as a club sanctioned event - possibly. It would be a blast for us to go! So if you have to put in your vacation requests early like me, maybe consider that Friday...I do not have it confirmed on the official 66 web site but it usually is the last weekend in September and I did find the 2009 date on another site.

I went the last 2 years, had a fun time both times. It's a laid back weekend long carshow. Very different from the Detroit Woodward Dream Cruise but both offer something different and I plan to continue on going to both each year.

Springfield is a neat little city to visit. I highly recommend the Hilton which is a bit out of town but has all the cushy amenities a fat ass like me requires. Missus BP and I stayed there for the MCA show in 2007 and she got all sloppy drunk at their bar. That's always a plus for the pure entertainment factor alone.

I remember that beautiful trophy your Mach won. : ) That was something else! the nearest MCA show is in Indianapolis this year..I do not think I scheduled a Friday off to make that one and my car is not ready for real judging anyway.

Only problem is it fell on NMRA this year. I need to look and see if it's on the same weekend again

Just looked and it is not on same weekend. Maybe I'll go

Shar, there may be hope for you afterall. I'm thinking there's a good chance there might be class judging for the 05-09 Ponys since the 2010s are coming out now. That means no more participant judging which means your car would be judged against itself and not the other cars in the class. And that usually means the cleanest car wins, not the most pimped out ones! Something to think about....

The route 66 fest was a blast!
Me and 8 other Grabbers showed up this past show.
You have to attend this show, it's a lot better then spending an afternoon at a parking lot.
You are actually on the street with shops, storees, bars, and restarunts all around!
Here's a few pics from last year!

A lot of Stangs at the show!

I guess I'll just have to post this one instead.
Me and Dan at the Elk Grove show!

Bookmarked!

What is the advantage to staying at the host hotel? $149 a night.

There is the Clarion @$99 that looks like it is right downtown also. Where did you stay and was it convenient? I'm not going on a real vacation this year, so I wouldn't mind splurging IF it would be worth it.

I'm thinking those rooms will sell out pretty quick. When should rooms be booked? I mean do we have time to really decide like in June or so?

Tell me about where you stayed,, was it convenient and would you stay there again? Restaurant on site? Rather have breakfast before I to go anywhere..: ) Hairdryer? LOL Coffee in the room?? Yeah I'm serious..LOL

I've stayed at the abraham lincoln the last 2 years, its cheaper then the hilton and right across the street, as well as right across the street from the show area of downtown. I would recommend booking early I know some people that tried the hilton last year and it was booked.

Hey the Abe Hotel looks like a great place they have rooms $70 and up. I want the Presidential floor with a big ole king size bed for 109.00 And right now there is availbility. We SOOOOOOOO have to DO this.

Maybe I should contact some other clubs and see if a few might also go with us? I'm thinking this is going to happen

Presidential floor sounds nice! I'm all for booking the hotel rooms now (well, i suppose we should find out what sort of deposit they want) - so i'll amend that to if the hotel doesn't require a deposit then we should book!

That is not a bad idea...plus I think we could get a refund if something came up. Two Summers ago I was supposed to go to the MCA show in Sprinfield...could NOT get the freakin day off because of seniority. That REALLY upset me. But I did get full refund because I cancelled in plenty of time.

Lemme send emails to some of my contacts..it would be fun to be in a group

Um...when I did the Hotels.com/Orbitz/Travelocity thing looking for good hotels in Springfield two Spring Breaks ago the consensus in nearly every review I read was that the Abe Hotel was a dive. Gorgeous lobby but crummy rooms. We ended up deciding to stay at the Route 66 Hotel which is about 2 miles from downtown (closer to the Crowne Plaza) and it was a really nice place for cheap (I'm pretty sure it was former Holiday Inn). It has a 50s diner style restaurant that was slower than **** but the decor was Route 66 themed with old bikes and they even had an old car in the lobby. Not as fancy as the Crowne Plaza which I HIGHLY recommend, but I'd stay at the '66 again in a heartbeat. Again, I did my investigating 2 years ago so it's possible the Abe Hotel has been updated since, but I highly doubt it considering how depressed Springfield seemed to me.

Did you stay there before, from driving past the rt66 hotel it looks like its in a bad part of down and appears to be a dump? I haven't stayed there so I don't know from personal experience. The abe lincoln from my understanding was just renovated about 2 years ago, and for the cost difference between that and the hilton I stay there.
The main reason I stay there is because once you park your car friday night I just leave it in the street and don't move it all weekend (they have cops patrol the streets all night since alot of people do this) The abe lincoln and hilton are litterally right on the road the show starts, so no travel required.

*edit* just looked at the link and it appears thats a different rt 66 hotel, since the one I've seen has no conference center.

03-15-2009, 03:18 PM
Yeah, that's a different motel you're thinking of. The south end of Springfield is pretty decent and I didn't worry at all about safety. The 66 Hotel I'm referring to was renovated maybe 10 years ago and while the rooms are still Holiday Inn-like it's only about 75 bucks a night compared to the $125+ for the downtown hotels. From what I read about the Abe I believe the majority of the renovations were on the lobby and much less on the rooms. Again, they could have continued to renovate the rooms at the Abe so I can be completely wrong about it. I was just passing on what I read. Then again, being downtown for the event probably would outweigh a so-so hotel room. Personally I could sleep on the floor as long as the shower head is above my head! :D

Yea I usually spend very little time in a hotel room when I'm at an event other then sleeping, so rooms don't matter to me as much.

I have to chime in here... HAD AN AWESOME TIME LAST YEAR!!! Even the wife did and pushed me to do it again this year. Met Dan there last year and another fellow forumer from Kansas.

Stayed at the Hilton last year. Big Hilton fan, but not overly impressed. Staying across the street this year at the Abraham Lincoln Hotel. Either is great, as already said, you can park on the street for the show on Friday night and not move until you leave on Sunday! Everything's within walking. Great show, great cars, great experience.

Already have the day off, already have reservations at ALH, just need to get registered!

Trust me you will see stangs down there. Mustangs are one of the few cars that they actually split up by years at this event, most of the trophys are just make and/or model. They usually make up the categories based on what kind of cars pre-register. You basically must pre-register for this event, if not you risk not being allowed in.

If you want, you can meet up with my herd of Mustangs (about 15 strong) in the parking lot at the Holiday Inn Express 3050 S. Dirksen Pkwy at 4:10pm?
That's just across the street and a few hotels north from the staging lot for Friday's night parade!
We are tentatively leaving the hotel lot at 4:15 to the staging lot.
That should put us in just 1/2 way or so in line of the parade.

I cannot go...and now I am short $$. So even if my Mom feels stronger and I'm the only one here to take care of her, I still have no money after buying the laptop.

I registered on the phone. I asked for a confirmation number but they give out any. They said you need to go to sixth and jackson to get your packet when you arrive. It cost me $35.00 + 3.00 handling. Did nayone get a confirm number or email of acknowledgement?

Congrats Scott! Registration is no big deal once you arrive. You can just stop by, there, they have everything setup in a parking lot. Just make sure you get to the staging area on time for the cruise into town!

I have a friend that lives in Springfield and he says they predicted rain today and they got nothing.
We are all hoping the weatherman will be wrong because my hotel reservations are non refundable so I am going... rain or shine!

Too bad, we should have come up with the idea of doing our own WCS awards down at Springfield earlier. I have read on a couple other group forums that others do that. Maybe an idea for next year.

Latest I read was SOLID rain tomorrow until late PM. Scattered T-Storms on Saturday. Not going to go crazy cleaning this time around. Already have the car wash location circled for when I get into town, just in case.
