I have been searching for the most cost efficent way to do my motor build this winter and tools are one of the cost that keep popping up. Some tools you can purchase at a local auto store including some you can rent. Others are best to be bought or you can rent them also from companies on the internet. Here are some examples:

This is the Powerbuilt Crank Puller and installer, you can pull your crank pulley with the special 3 jaw puller and replace again with the bearing pulley installer, also you can remove harmonic balancers with the threaded puller. This kit is good for Ford GM and Chrysler including the right threads for the 4.6 modular motor. I ended up purchasing this for $99.00 new at Advance Auto.

Advance Auto also rents these for free, but I had to have this. Advance has many of these Powerbuilt tools for all kinds of jobs including engine, suspension and trans. I'll be renting the Power steering puller, that I'd rather not have but again free free free. Advance has a much better selection of rental tools than Autozone and it appears that they have a little more knowlege about specific parts.

The Alternator pulley is a problem, it's unique and if you don't know someone who has this special puller you can get this at saleen for around $60.00

Some other Advance Auto Parts
Found a torque angle guage for $9.99, this is a must for the factory torque to yeild bolts like Cam bolts and Crank bolts. Head bolts I'm going with APR and avoiding the stretch.

Also a nice set of plastic scrapers, another must for cleaning off old gaskets without hurting the metal surface $14.99

Some of the more special tools like valve spring compressors and cam locks you will need to buy, Freedom Tool and Die is a good place to get them http://www.site.shopfreedomracing.com you can rent them too but you pay for them up front and on return you get half the value back. With shipping and time, I would just purchase these doesn't seem worth it.
