Sure, they make sense. The list was not the "Top Ten Fastest Mustangs of all Time" or the "Top Ten Most Desireable Mustangs of all Time".
It was the top ten Mustangs when considering yearly (or model) sales combined with their influence on market as a whole. When looking at it that way, you have to include such performance dogs as the 74 Mustang II for the numbers sold. Just as you need to include the sales dogs of the Turbo SVO for being ahead of the styling curve.
