Ok I have this all plugged in now....now my baby should be Ok through the winter, right?? The garage is not heated and the instructions do say the maximum performance is for 50 degrees.

Yup, you'll be good to go! Just don't drive that car now until after the next RAIN storm so all the salt (where any was actually used) can be washed off the road. April sounds like a good month....

You all sure the block won't freeze and crack or something horrible??? I apologize...I am scared-this weather is making me feel trapped and I'm not liking it. Of course NONE of us is liking this, but I'm worried I'll break down and be stranded on the road, black ice ?? as everyone is flying past me, and just mechanical breakdowns. To me, this is scary. SORRY.

DON'T WORRY!

You're perfectly fine Shar. I don't even have a garage and I've NEVER had a cold related issue with any of my vehicles. Anti-freeze is called that for a reason and will protect to -30 or worse. Start the pony up every week or so while it's below 20 and let it warm up to operational temperature and she'll be just fine. Hell, my 94 Suburban with 156000 miles started up like a champ this morning because the battery is only a year old or so. Your Escape will be fine too.

LOL...Ok. : ) But I still need to start her up then? I will take the battery tender off before I try that. ; ) The last time I drove it I know the power steering was a bit tight..like sluggish fluid. I have to wait for the charger to be in the green zone before I do that. Everytime I go out for a smoke..it's in the red.

Cars are a little like people in that they function a little slower in cold weather. Starting up the car every once in awhile is good so the fluids circulate but even once a month should be good. Why your power steering is a little sluggish is probably because the car wasn't warmed up enough. If you can give the car a minimum of 10 minutes to warm up in winter the happier it will be. 20 minutes or better in -20 weather! My work truck runs for 30 minutes when it's below 30 out but that's mainly because I like it nice and toasty and I ain't paying for the gas! :023:

Shar I think your coolant will freeze in the cold sub zero temps. Your only hope is to buy me a Lentech aod. your car might not have any problems then. To make sure nothing will happen throwing in a Stallion 3000 non lock up converter will guarantee no problerms with the car

Has the green light ever come on? When I first got a bt jr it was actually defective and never charged, always said charging. Exchanged it and the other one worked fine.

Are you guys trying to make Shar mental? Well, if you can't fight them, I suppose I oughta join 'em. Hey Shar, do you know what kind of air you have in your tires? I hope it's the air that's rated for 20 below or your tires might deflate.... :poke:

The charger just went to green. : ) While it was below zero it didn't and that's expected because the optimum temperature is rated at 50. I was going to pull her out and start her BUT while I went to work, 5 inches of snow blew over the front of the drive. I shoveled however, I didn't want to just back her out and start sliding trying to get her back in again.

I need to get the oil changed I'm off a Saturday 2 weeks from now and I'll drive the route searching for pot holes 1st. That'll take care of the tires too. Nope I do not have nitrogen..I did at one time but the dealers didn't stock that option. Maybe now they might..They look like they could use a little.

Thanks I appreciate you all taking the time to explain things considering the extremes we've been through.

Damn. The nitrogen option kind of took the fun out of my comment. Do you have all-temperature Turn signal fluid? :wall:

Shar change the oil in the spring since you are not driving it.

I disconnected the neg battery cable around November 15 and haven't touched the car until yesterday. It cranked over fine and started after 5 seconds of cranking. My car is in a garage with heat off.

I used one of those type of charges on my snowmobile over summer and in the fall the battery was dry. I think it was a 1/2 amp. I am sure yours is better then the crap one I had

Yeah agree...I'm guessing it won't hurt any. You know 3 months/3K miles...was December 26th. Sure looks pretty all nice and clean just napping.

not to throw more fuel on the fire (well right now, a fire might actually feel good, going below zero again tonight!)...

at -60 deg, power steering and automatic trans fluid starts to freeze while driving!
